Text-link Ads took the top spot for the first time ever. Genius Types made $181.58 from text links sold and an additional $150 from affiliate referrals.

AdSense income took a drop for the first month this year, falling into the second spot. Traffic has been slower lately, and AdSense income is reflecting that.

LinkWorth: $150.00

No new LinkWorth advertisers were added last month, but the residual income on the 3 that I’ve had remained.

Amazon Affiliate Program: $20.69

Amazon income paid for another book to read this month.

I keep Revver around just to giggle every time the income stats come in. Most of the money comes from this little video that we did of our cat Milo. We like to joke that that makes him employed, unlike our other cat who mooches off us all day.

Genius Types income was up 24% in September to $784.08.

LinkWorth Reversal

If you follow my income reports, you might notice that September’s figure is actually lower than the figure I reported in August. The reason for this discrepancy is a controversial adjustment that LinkWorth made to affiliate accounts last month. This adjustment affected affiliates who have recently referred new publishers to LinkWorth.

In an email dated September 11, 2007, LinkWorth notified affiliates that a programming error had overstated affiliate earnings on new referrals. As a result of this mistake, they debited over $300 from my account. They even debited $90 that had already been direct-deposited into my bank account.

This whole mess started in July when I referred 9 new publishers to LinkWorth. Each time I logged into my LinkWorth account, I a saw a $10 credit for each of these referrals for a total of $90 that I thought I earned in July. In August, I referred another 21 publishers and showed a $210 referral credit for the month.

I had referred even more publishers when I received the email telling me that these credits had been a mistake. LinkWorth informed me that this particular referral fee was never promised in their terms and that a programming error was mistakingly crediting affiliate accounts.

In an email, I asked LinkWorth to consider correcting the problem from that point forward, but to leave our accounts alone. From my point of view, reporting it on our login screens implied that we earned the money.

LinkWorth’s response was basically that it was clear in the contract and they were going ahead with the account reversals. As a result, I’ve had to restate two months of blog earnings and I’m over $300 poorer than I thought I was.

LinkWorth is still a strong money earner for Genius Types and I would recommend it; but I think you can understand my frustration.

September Income

The compound growth rate (three-month rolling average) is at 25% per month: excellent, but less than the 50% I thought I had with the LinkWorth referrals.

With 66,207 page views in September, my ICM (income per 1000 page views) was $11.80..

Google AdSense: $339.38

AdSense income jumped 26% in August, on par with overall income. AdSense has been the most consistent and productive income earner since the beginning on Genius Types.

With rumors of a shifting policy at Google towards link-sellers, I’ll be interested to see if Genius Types keeps its pagerank of 6 and therefore high search traffic and AdSense clicks.

LinkWorth: $200.00

I now have 3 advertisers purchasing links through LinkWorth and my cut is $50 each.

The other $50 is a result of LinkWorth’s new affiliate policy on publisher referrals, which now pays $50 if the referral does over $100 in business. One of my 30+ referrals has achieved this.

Text-Link Ads: $191.29

Text-link Ads sold out all ten spots in September. At $20 per link, that got me pretty close to $200. Now, the only way I’ll make more with TLA is when they adjust my price per link. With traffic on Genius Types increasing the way it has been, I anticipate that happening soon.

Amazon Affiliate Program: $17.64

All the book reviews I’ve been doing as of late have paid off. The income is nothing like AdSense, but it’s better than a sharp stick in the eye.

Almost all of my Revver.com comes from one article: Five Ways to Create Passive Income with Little or no Money which also happens to be my most viewed.

Overall, a great month on par with expectations. Let’s see what next month brings.

With 62,311 page views in August, my ICM (income per 1000 page views) was $13.51, up about 10% from last month.

I predicted this blog would grow exponentially, but I had no idea the growth curve would match up this perfectly.

LinkWorth $348.71

LinkWorth has been a surprise money-maker since I introduced it to Genius Types last month. LinkWorth is a text-link broker in the spirit of Text-Link Ads, but with more flexibility.

It claimed the top money-making spot in its second month.

Since LinkWorth allows us to set our own prices for ads, I’ve been able to harvest a higher fee per link. I sold another link in August to bring my total to three ads. I get 50% of the $100 fee per link for a pro-rated total of $138.71.

LinkWorth also has an outstanding affiliate program that gives you $10 per signup and 5% of the recurring transactions for the life of each account. Being a cashflow guy, I really like this model of recurring residual income.

As a result of an article I wrote about Linkworth, 21 people signed up last month, giving me a total of $210 in referral fees.

Google AdSense $259.74

AdSense income jumped 39% in August. The click-through rate has continued to be strong, and the average income per click is edging up slightly. Of coarse, the main reason AdSense income increased was the dramatic increase in pageviews.

Text-Link Ads $203.26

I reached a significant milestone with Text-link Ads in August when I sold out the ad slots. Unfortunately, TLA has kept the fee for each ad the same since I opened an account with them.

Amazon Affiliate Program $22.31

I’ve been pleasantly surprised with my Amazon affiliate income lately. I never really expect to make anything with them, but I’m selling more and more books for them with each book review.

Revver.combought another coffee for me last month. The majority of the clicks are from a silly little video of my cat, Milo. I guess I can stop bugging him to get a job.

The average profit per location was $23.70, right around my expectations of $25. Thats’ a 72% profit margin when accounting for the cost of candy.

Getting Closer!

My goal is to make enough passive income to pay all my expenses. At that point, my time will be free to do what I love: making film.

AdSense reclaimed the top spot this month. My click-through rate has continued to increase ever since I changed the link color in my AdSense ads from red to blue.

LinkWorth $156.13

I was introduced to LinkWorth last month as an alternative to Text-Link Ads. I was skeptical at first, by my mind was quickly changed when my first ad sold for over twice the rate that I was getting from Text-Link Ads.

LinkWorth allows you to set your own prices for ads. As an experiment, I set my ad prices at $100 per link (vs. $40 for Text-Link Ads). You also have the choice of taking 70% of the revenue and letting the market decide how many ads you sell, or 50% and having LinkWorth help market for you. I chose the latter and sold 2 ads within the first two weeks.

After those two ads were pro-rated for the remaining days in the month, I earned $66.13.

LinkWorth also has an outstanding affiliate program that gives you $10 per signup and 5% of the recurring transactions for the life of each account. Being a cashflow guy, I really like this model of recurring residual income.

As a result of an article I wrote about Linkworth, 9 people signed up last month for a total of $90.

My review of SEO Book last month brought in a $25 bonus and $20 for a sale. This ebook is definitely worth the money, and they have a pretty generous affiliate program to boot.

Commissions from Amazon have been steadily rising with every book review. It’s not much, but worth the time to put in the affiliate links.

Text-link Ads Ads out-performed Google AdSense for the first time. I sold $174.93 worth of Text-links in June.

This number was boosted by a $25 commission for referring a new publisher to Text-link Ads.

I’m currently averaging around $6 a day from AdSense. The day-to-day earnings have been much more consistent now that I’m averaging more than 1000 page impressions a day.

I made a huge discovery that almost doubled my click-through rate. By simply changing the color of my AdSense ads from a pinkish-red and black to bright blue and orange, I saw an instant increase in CTR.

Tips

June was my best month ever for tips, $37.

Ever since I changed my tip link from “please consider leaving a tip” to “please consider leaving a $1 tip,” tips have become a contributer. Requesting a specific number seems to be working.

Amazon Affiliate Program

I earned $10.51 in June from Amazon.com book sale commissions. The more books I review, the more books Amazon sells.

Bulk Candy Vending – $1139.66

I consider bulk candy vending to be a passive income source because I only work it two days a month.

I’m finally reaping the benefits of landing about 10 new locations two months ago. I’m down to around 7 machines in my kitchen, and I’m anxious to get them out.

I didn’t add any locations in May, in fact, I actually lost 2 bringing my total to 42 locations. One of the lost locations was pretty good, but the other was awful; so they canceled each other out.

The decrease actually helped my averages. The average profit per location was $27.13. My numbers reflect a 72% profit margin when accounting for the cost of candy.

Blogging – $245.41

Network Marketing – $57.61

I made enough from my network marketing company to pay for the products I buy. Basically, I got all my consumable Sam’s Club-type products for free. Watch out for this number to jump in the coming months as I focus on this stream of income.

I sold $105.33 worth of Text-link ads in May, more than doubling my April number.

Tips

It was a good month for tips. After going dry in April, my tip jar had 3 tips for $12 in May.

I changed my tip request in May from “please consider leaving a tip” to “please consider leaving a $1 tip.” Maybe the strategy of a specific number paid off.

Amazon Affiliate Program

I earned $10.00 in April from Amazon.com book sale commissions. A renewed emphasis on book reviews appears to be working out.

I sold an eBook for Steve Aitchison that earned me a commission of $2.91.

I was able to increase my cashflow from vending by finding several new locations last month. These new locations resulted in an additional $200 this month in income, without a noticeable increase in work.

I am down to a handful of machines that are now stored in my kitchen. My plan is to place the remaining machines and then concentrate on another stream of income.

In April, I added 11 locations between two cities: Los Angeles and Austin, TX, for a total of 44 locations. The average profit per location was $20.57, roughly the same as last month, a 72% profit margin when accounting for the cost of candy.

Blogging – $152.53

Blogging income increased nicely in April. Read the April Monetization Report for complete breakdown.

Automated eBay Business – $16.14

My eBay business is taking its own sweet time to develop. Since I am running most of my auctions at cost in order to build a customer base, I won’t show much of a profit for several months.

Network Marketing – $32.05

Network marketing provided $32.05 in income without an ounce of effort on my part. I plan on focusing on this stream in the next few months.

Conclusion

For the first time in my life, I surpassed $1000 in passive income! I am well on my way to my covering all of my expenses with passive income, the definition of time freedom.

Six Months to $100

Last month’s prediction of six months to $100 in Adsense just barely came true. Total Adsense income for April was $100.34. You can bet I was glued to my Adsense stats in the final hours of April. I got that last click to put me over $100 in the nick of time.

For the second month in a row, I earned $.30 from Revver.com. This brings my all-time total up to $15. This month, I should start to see more now that I’m producing more video.

I played the game over and over until I internalized a new way of looking at creating income. To this day, it’s my favorite board game and some of the best money I’ve ever spent.

Bulk Candy Vending – $700.30

My vending business has always been my most reliable source of passive income. I call it passive because it only takes two easy days a month to drive around and pick up my money.

I have a few unplaced machines in my kitchen for which I need to find homes. After they’re placed, I don’t have any desire to expand further. My intention when starting this business was to create passive income, not to create a part-time job.

In March, I had 33 active locations in two cities: Los Angeles and Austin, TX. The average income per location was $21.22, which is a 72% profit margin when accounting for the cost of candy.

Blogging – $96.67

Blogging is definitely the least passive of all my income streams, but unlike candy vending, it increases each month while the workload remains the same.

Plus, I really enjoy it, so it’s hard to call it ‘work’.

Automated eBay Business – $55.83

The newest addition to my income streams is an automated eBay business. I found some products at wholesale that I can easily replace and set up some auctions. Since I set up the initial auctions, everything has been automatic. eBay re-lists them for me whenever one sells.

I hired my Mom to do the packing and shipping, so I can concentrate on building other income streams.

Network Marketing – $46.18

My most passive income source for March was network marketing. I earned $46.28 for work I did over six months ago. I haven’t paid attention to the business lately because I have been devoting most of my time to the other three businesses, but I’d like to get back to it as soon as the dust settles.

Rental Property – $0

I have one rental property in Austin that basically breaks even in terms of cashflow. I mention it because it’s making me money in less tangible ways. Every month, the tenants pay down my mortgage a little and the property gains in value. Also, the rental market in Austin is tightening and I’ll soon be able to demand more for rent.

Conclusion

All in all, I’m pretty happy with almost $1000 in passive income. In the board game Cashflow 101, the object is to collect enough passive income to cover your expenses. In my real-life game, I’m well on my way!

Monetization of Genius Types is right on schedule. I’m happy with the amount of money I’m earning and especially the growth rate.

The compound monthly growth rate of income earned on GeniusTypes.com in 2007 is 24%. If it continues to grow at this rate, Genius Types will earn over $1000 in March 2008.

Six Months to $100

I was reading a thread on Steve Pavlina’s Forum discussing the idea that it takes six months of good blog posts to achieve $100/month from Google AdSense. Most of the other responses echoed the truth in this general rule of thumb.

Steve himself responded, saying that he earned $53.02 in his fifth month, and $114.63 in his sixth. Reading this validated my performance, since March was my fifth full month of blogging and I earned $74.46 from AdSense.

I only earned $.30 from Revver.com this month. This brings my all-time total up to $14.70. Almost all of this income is from the ads at the end of the videos in the article Five Ways to Create Passive Income with Little or No Money.

As I add more video content to this site, I’ll see this number rise.
