I would suspect that while exponential growth applies to a career and one’s success, it might be a possibility that a person hits that red line or attention span point and rather than quit continues a job without ever building the connections or relationships needed to grow or otherwise are impacted by the emotional state to a crippling of ones worth and motivation, in which then they get stuck in a daily-weekly-yearly and perhaps decade long routines and forget the reasoning behind their madness of not continuing their growth.

Thank you. This is the one argument that is going to convince me not to toss my dissertation (and thus the PhD) into the dustbin of history. All kinds of people are working on me to think about the future career benefits, the salary increases, etc. and nothing is convincing. And guess what, it’s been about six years of hard work and almost no payoff.. and I”ve had enough. But if what you are saying is that it’s my emotional state, and it’s a matter of “mastering the emotional pull to quit”, thanks for calling me on it, shucks, I guess I can do that.

Excellent article. Good reinforcement of the concept of consistency. That’s one personality trait I really need to work on. These are good examples to show that exponential growth doesn’t only apply to money. Great inspiration and motivation!
