  • Brian, This is an excellent piece of work in that it outlines and reassures us that there is a practical way forward for the dilemmas that cofront us. I particullarly liked the treatment of the lower paying higher value earned income section as it is in line with the necessary mindset change to passive income.

  • I think that one kind of friendship this article fails to take into account is childhood friends. Some people are still friends with someone they met in kindergarten. These types of friendships tend not to involve romantic attraction because of the Westermarck effect, but they can be very emotionally intimate.

  • Good article. I know you weren’t talking about tax purposes, but I know that for income tax purposes it would most definitely NOT be passive income. The blogger is actively involved in the activity. I think a better term than passive income might be residual income. MrAchievement Stanley F. Bronstein Attorney, CPA, Author & Motivational Speaker

  • Developing a business sense is probably easier than developing creativity. Business sense comes with experience. If entrepreneurs stay with it long enough, they learn to become organized, how to do bookkeeping, etc. With creativity, on the other hand, you may be able to develop what you have to a certain degree, but it’s mostly something that you are born with (or not).

  • I know this is Brian’s site, but I feel a need to say something about income with bulk vending. There is money to be made, however, don’t expect for all of your machines to make $50 a month. This is possible, however not likely in a normal location. I look for $10 an account (singles with toys), any lower I pull it and relocate it before I service anymore machines (Most spots will pull this). This way I don’t get a collection of machines in my warehouse. From what I understand, Brian is in restaurants. This is why his averages are so high. Restaurants are a profit powerhouse. Now, I vend toys. No candy simply because candy is, in my views, not profitable. Plus, you have waste, and all other things. Candy causes a vendor pain. Plus puts a pinch on the profits as candy prices are going up. Hope this helps people getting started. Also go to my forums and register for a free account. Read up on bulk vending!http://kickstartvendin g.com/forum/index.php The site is like a giant book donated for you to read by generous people who post on our over 5,000 topics everyday! • I found this article to be extremely interesting, especially because it came from a guy’s perspective. But I am a woman and in a strange situation myself. I was very close friends with this guy for 10 years. Even though for most of that time we weren’t in the same city, we have stayed very close. In retrospect, I suspect he had feelings for me toward the beginning of our friendship but I think I was probably oblivious (willingly and unwittingly as well). Any way, I started developing feelings for him last fall, but I wasn’t quite sure how I felt yet. We spent a weekend together and at some point I said something about how we should get married in 5 years if we hadn’t met anyone (we are both about 30). He said “Are you sure you want to wait that long?” to which I responded by freaking out - literally I started talking about my biological clock and how quickly 5 years would come. Then after a few weeks I started to realize that I might be in love with him. So I wrote him an email - one of the most important things I’ve said to anyone ever. I said that I thought we deserved a chance & that I had freaked out before but that if I had to imagine the person I would want to be with it would be him. I acknowledged how doing it over email was crazy but I didn’t know how else to say what I needed to say to him, that if he needed time it was fine, but I didn’t want to lose him. & he freaked out….

  • Fantastic ideas here. The best income is income where you do something once and get money over and over for the one task. Some other ideas are Trademarks. A bit more expensive - but if you come up with something unique - it can pay off. How about Adsense? This is another good passive income - but does take a bit of effort to get started. • I really love the idea of generating passive income thru blogging. I am also an artist, and I have started a couple of blogs, but I still don’t understand two very important elements: How do I generate traffic to my blog, and how does one actually generate income just by blogging? All of the articles on link text, etc., just boggle me with how complicated they sound. I’d need to hire someone to get me set up! I do enjoy writing, and I think I could really be successful with this if I just knew the secrets of how to get it going. Can you help me out here?

  • Your background (Methodist) and mine (Baptist) are the same, and your gradual discovery of other religions, thinking and science, mirror my own findings almost scarily! I have often been thought of by my own family as heretical for my er………. at least in my mind, open-minded and enlightened views! If only more people thought not to polarise their religious thinking, into only that of their parents, let go of the dogma that usually surrounds it, and sought to understand the views of others, the world would undoubtedly be a far more peaceful place!

I doubt that anyone can write something on a daily basis, that is sufficiently insightful as to be really memorable. Far better to have articles such as the excellent ones here, which are written from a reasoned and experienced point of view, than someone’s daily ramblings about stuff which may, or may not work long term!

I couldnt get my head round why I have been a lifelong entrepreneur, designer, author, internationally known in my sphere, never worked for an employer in my career, and still have little to show for it, despite being careful with money! This book showed me where I had been going wrong- I slapped my forehead so many times, I gave myself a headache! Logical, practical and also ethical, it is a must read.

I have a very high IQ and inventive people and geniuses all run through my bloodline. I can’t tell you how many ‘dumb’ things I’ve done without thinking! I was never a disruptive child but I would constantly forget things immediately after they enter my thought! I am terrible with names, but I can memorize license plates, remember SSN for no reason and have a keen ability to fix things I’ve never even seen before. I would like to talk with someone though because I have issues with school. I am in college and fail everything, despite knowing how to do ALL of it! I would just like to understand how I think…? • Interesting read. If it rests your heart, know that I was not raised by a family of believers, rather i was raised by Bikers yet still Christ saved me. As for your verse relating to judging, know that you do not have a correct understanding of the verse. All people judge, even our captain of salvation (Jesus) judged. If you read through the bible, in Romans it explains that judging is not the problem, for we are suppose to know what is ‘right’ and what is ‘wrong’, rather it is how we judge. Also, i love science :D but if it isn’t testable, observable and repeatable, it is not science - it is a theory. :D I talk a bit about God on my blog, even though it is a financial blog :S I just started and i am unsure how it will work out, but check it out if you want.

  • I love this little article and commentary. I have noticed that a lot of folks don’t really understand liability. I will do my best to quickly sum up the finer points. Lets assume that you are just earning a passive income on about ten machines that you bought and placed with no licenses, or any of that “business stuff” that you have heard about. Lets further assume that some kit pulls your good solid metal machine over on himself and splits open his head. Ok, at this point, his parents can sue you for about everything. Now the key word in this law suit is…YOU. They will sue you. They get your savings, retirement, house etc. Ok, thats a little more bleak than would probably happen, but they COULD get your personal assets. So what is the easiest way to protect yourself from the possibility? Well, quite simply don’t place those ten machines… At least, don’t place them personally. Thats the point of an LLC. It exists as a separate entity, and it does all the dirty work, and takes all the blame, if anything should go wrong. Under this scenario, the family calls you up and tries to sue, but the LLC has only ten machines as assets…hardly worth the trouble of a lawsuit. So you discuss the situation with them and agree to help pay the bills out of the goodness of your heart (or not if you so choose), but they really can’t sue. Dollar for dollar, filing for an LLC will buy you more protection than any other…

Find out how Many hours he spends on it a month vs how much he makes. Subtract out what you would have to pay someone to run it for you and then detrmine the ROI.

  • I agree with your comments on making blogging passive. I am just not sure how you do that in regard to timing. It seems like at first you need allot of resources and content created to get indexed and noticed. This to me is work. Passive would come later once you have everything turn key. Then you can enjoy a passive income life style. But it seems you will never totally get away with it being strictly passive because the readers of a good blog will demand a continuing stream of articles. Thanks.

The service is great, but I did have to accept “wordpress.com” as the ending of my URL, which I’m not crazy about. I’m thinking I might pay for an URL and web-host before putting time into expanding the site. If I want to make money from my blog in the long run, is it possible to do using Wordpress’s free service? Would I lose a large chunk of any profits to Wordpress? Could I build up content for free with my Wordpress URL then transfer my content to another host? Sorry if these questions are mundane. I’m new at this. Keep up the excellent work my friend.

In my previous career I was surrounded by staff who were waiting for the right time to make their move - to leave, start a business, improve their health etc. I am the only one who actually Just Did It. I made an audacious move to change careers and buy into an ad agency, quit my job and have never looked back. Four years later I have a successful business and live a great life. My old colleagues are either still there grumbling and waiting or have been fired. Its too easy to make excuses and never realise that today is the right time to follow your dreams.

  • Hi Brian, I agree with what you’re saying. I just came back from Life Directions at Peak Potentials and we did a demonstration where you take big rocks first, gravel second, sand third and water lastly and stuff them all into a glass jar. Everything fits as long as you put the big rocks in first …… but most of us tend to do the reverse. We put our big rocks last. Those big rocks are the things you talked about - starting a business, time with loved ones or time to exercise. • You said, “I see this site as a way to document the wisdom that I accumulate throughout life. Sometimes it comes to me frequently, and sometimes I go long periods of time without anything worth writing about.” This statement has given me new direcion for the several blogs I write on nutrition. Nutrition principles are timeless. I would rather post when I truly have something new and fresh to say.

  • Great article. Your mind can be your greatest asset or greatest liability. Your mindset dictates how your life turns out because of all those brain cells. I especially like your point about how “the Rich get their money back.” It’s important to think long term, especially when investing, and seeing the future potential of assets vs. liabilities. Thanks for the informative article.

I walked into a place, spoke the the operations manager, said about 20 secs worth of talking, before he said “sure, why not”! My first location!! This is such a great passive income idea. Thanks!

  • Such an enjoyable post. It just goes to show you that any endeavor to create income has to work for you. When it feels forced and unnatural, it will come out forced and unnatural and actually cause more harm than good. Business is often a result of strategically funneling your passion, knowledge and interests in a manner that (1) gives authentic value to your customer base and (2) doesn’t tax you to the point where it squeezes out all of your creativity. You hit it right on the nose when you spoke about finding the right mix of passive and active outlets for you. There are some who wake up to an enlightened view every day…and others who have about 3 enlightened views per month. The key is to give your creativity an outlet that will appease the appetite of your customer niche and give you a profitable return. The reality lies in whether you have the patience to test the system enough to find THAT balance that really works for you and your customer base. Thanks for sharing your insight and wisdom. I appreciate the fact that you choose to only give us the best of you.

  • Thanks for answering my question so quickly. Just for clarification, I have a scenario for you. Lets say someone gets injured or sick because of your machine or product in the machine. Wouldn’t you be liable? I’m not concerned about the machines being damaged, I’m concerned about people who become injured and who may want to sue me. Thank you.

  • I don’t own any insurance on my machines, but I get asked regularly about the risks associated with having equipment out in the public. I think as a vending operator, you have to calculate a certain amount of risk into your investments. I’ve never had one stolen, but I’ve had them pushed over, the locks jammed, toothpicks shoved in every possible crevice, etc. If you have good locations, your machines will pay for themselves in 6 months or less. If you loose one machine every couple of years, that’s just the cost of doing business.

Do you have insurance for your vending machines? Can a person like myself, starting with one or two machines get insurance? I want to start a vending business like you, but I’m concerned about protecting my personal assests.

  • I totally agree with you on this. I tend to think that blogging for income is a new age hunt for fools gold. Sure, there are some who will find riches, but most pursuants of this form of “passive income” are generally working just as hard as ever, at blogging instead of traditional employment. I also share the desire for a more passive income, more freedom and mobility. However I have directed my efforts at making my real world business more passive whilst increasing its profitability. In the last 2 years I have managed to transform myself from stressed out, overworked business owner to globetrotting, relaxed business owner. Its just a matter of applying all the great ideas of most online “passive income” experts to real world businesses. By being more focussed and better prioritized, by delegating and recruiting well and by increasing my margins significantly, I have been able to turn my business into a low stress, low involvement profit producer. I just returned from 6 weeks of skiing, checking into work occasionally via my macBook. I have multiple trips planned this year. I will be able to keep the business chugging along successfully via email from a resort in Sabah, the cabin of a yacht on the Great Barrier Reef, amongst the palm trees of Lord Howe Island, the beach in Hawaii and the poolside Noosa (Queensland). Thats not just passive…its great fun.

  • Wow!! way to claim something for yourself. Carlos Casteneda started wobbling on about leverage in the 60’s and he pinched the idea from the Greeks. I think it was archimedes who postulates that with a long enough lever and somewhere to put it, you can move the world. This is the point that you miss out…the place to put your lever. I like your blog a lot and find a lot of the thinking stimulating, but you have only talked about half an idea here. And, most of your thinking is about developing momentum…not enabling leverage. This is not surprising, as the gaining of the leverage is the hard part. Best of luck in the future Neil

  • For me, passive is when you don’t need to do it in significant frequency. If you are getting paid writers and still have to keep some business to do with them regularly, then it would be a side business, but certainly not passive.

  • I have been having a conversation just like this with a fellow blogger. We both like the idea of posting every day but do not want this to become a job. In order to accomplish this task I have two posts that occur each week that are “update posts.” Since my blog is on saving money one of these is about deals I find online and the other is weekly free samples and coupons. This fills two of the seven days with useful but not timeless content. The strategy my friend is employing is to do a series of posts. Son instead of having one very long post he breaks a topic up into four posts. I love this idea because most people no longer want to spend the time to read large amounts of content. They can come to your site read that days info and then come back again the next day for the next segment. Overall these two strategies have worked great for us.

  • I agree with Jason’s comment. Interesting and fresh content is a key. I would add to his comment that’s it’s important to include the right keywords with your content. Keywords + Fresh and Interestint Content = A solid way to make income online. This income can come as a result of affiliate products or just from using adsense on your website. Plus some will even pay you for writing. $4 an article at times. Thanks for the post!
