    Signs of Insecurity (127)

      Liddybet on January 27, 2012 10:12 pm

i have been married to one for 30 years. I read this yesterday and ticked all the boxes. I married when 18 he 25. I left in first 18 months. He was miserable to be around and it seemed that I was the cause of it. He drove me home! that’s how controlling he was. I never realised how much he took notes on where I was, when I came back home and not wanting me to work. I now realise that it was so that I was in his control all the time. If i bought a gift – he would complain. If I saved for a table or a lounge chair – he was not happy. If I bought shoes – he would say I have enough. It was fine for him to come and go around his farm but I had to account for everywhere I went. I mistook it for general interest – it wasn’t. I became the subject of his jokes and put downs. My family stopped visiting as they wanted to hit him as he was always putting me down. thirty years later, everyday is about him. Every hour is about him. He tells me that I do not cook proper food if anyone became sick in the house. I cook fresh all the time. I am a good cook. If i tried to keep the family car clean – I was criticised. Everything I do is criticised. He interrupts me when I speak, so now I sit and listen, sometimes for three hours whilst driving over our farm, and don’t say a word – he does not even notice that it is a one way communication. He never lets me finish a question that he asks. He fixes…

Here is my issue and I admit right of the hop I cannot tell if she is emotionally immature, suffering from severe insecurities and low self-esteem, or of there is maybe a more severe issue at hand. My girlfriend constantly avoids getting in to relationships, even with someone she loves deeply. Everytime we get close she makes excuses and pushes away. She says things like she is afraid to settle that she is afraid that there may always be some one better out there, but she has also admitted to being afraid in general, of being hurt amongst other things. One minute she’ll call me her man and tell me she loves me, next minute she’ll say we’re merely “friends with beneifts” and that “she doesn’t see it going anywhere”. She’ll say she’s interested to see where it goes; where each step is going to take us, then turn around and claim she doesn’t remember saying that. Sometimes she’ll hug me very deeply and won’t let go burying her head into my chest, other times she’ll do what I call the “one armed hug”. I have noticed that when we are together she has one tone of voice and we get along great and have very lucid calm discussions, but when she is around her family, her voice litteraly goes up an octave or 2 and she reverts into some sort of childlike state. She also claims she has uds(ugly suckling syndrome) and depsite other advice I have been given, she actually cannot handle being told she is beautiful, or she can handle it but not every day,…

Found your blog resourceful and quite imaginative. I guess you already have made it in your film making venture because aside from making the candy vending business lessons seem relatively easy thanks to your writing; i found myself chuckling imagining the candy man speeding down the street in an equally souped up candy automobile with a cooler full of candies occupying the back seat, visiting one of your locations for a refill and stealthily making an entrance without causing as little as a stir. This is one scene i would love to see in a movie. LOL! I will plunge into this business in my homeland of Kenya thanks to your insight and encouragement.

How Talent Can Hold You Back (56)

I don’t think that talent is negative. Even if talented people can’t produce results at first, they are able to learn the skills needed in work. Sure it might be that untalented people can provide results some times but generally they don’t know either how to provide results. Thank you for the post.

I actually run a vending business as one of my ventures, and I can tell you it IS a great and cheap biz to get into. Profit is around 50% after all expenses including overhead. It’s also a great motivatore to see the money actually in your hands at every stop. Somehow it feels more like “real” success.

How to Break into the Film Industry (194)

      Roy on January 19, 2012 2:56 am

Biggest motivation ever! Thanks so much for sharing this. I will be graduating with a finance degree this year, but my passion is films, films, and films! My family and friends support me and are all for me to join movies. I studied finance in college as a fallback. I already have a job lined up with a large bank once I graduate. I will take your advice about getting rid of debts, saving money, then hitting up the film industry. I think 26-28 would be a good age for me to leave everything and join the film industry. Thanks again!

      Egor on January 14, 2012 7:55 pm

Hey! :) great article, very moving for wannabe directors like all of us :) I am 21, about to graduate with an undergrad Arts degree (in International Relations) from a fairly nice school, I also think that an irrelevant degree like that gives you self-enrichment and insight that makes a great filmmaker. I have no debt to pay off, and I’m facing a decision of going to grad school in my discipline, or chasing the dream, moving to Vancouver and starting film career from the gutter. I have to relevant experience or almost no education (took some film/theater/writing electives) but got some self-taught skills, and tons of motivation :) what do you think, should I go for it?

I want to thank you so much. I cant even tell my mom what my real major is because I know she’ll flip out so I tell her Im majoring to become a doctor. I do believe in myself but sometimes it gets hard basically pretending to be something Im not. So, thank you again (whoever wrote this) you got my spirits up again. =)

This sounds like a great idea, but doesn’t factor in expenses that need to be covered when something breaks in the rentals. It doesn’t factor in time and money spent trying to fill your rental. It doesn’t factor in your renters trashing your place and moving out. Lots of problems to deal with. This is hardly passive income.

How to Compartmentalize Your Savings Accounts (13)

      VincentEmmanuel on December 3, 2011 8:29 pm

This is good advice. I’ve been doing this for years. My bank in Australia lets you set up free online accounts, with about 4.5% compounded monthly if you don’t withdraw. I have a account for: Gifts Car Short Term Savings Long Term Savings Business I also have a main account which all money goes into first, and direct debits come out of. Whenever this account gets above a certain amount I trim it, putting the excess into the short term savings account. I also set up regular scheduled transfers from my main accounts into my car, gifts and business accounts. This means that when it comes to christmas or birthday presents, car maintenance etc, I have a healthy account to draw without having to worry about cutting into my main savings accounts. Another main account is my expenses account. Nothing comes into or out of this account except what I use on my card or transfer manually. This allows me to have a card on my wallet for everyday expenses, and since I have to manually transfer money into it, it gives me an idea of what I’m spending(throwing away) on everyday junk like take-out, alcohol etc. My system isn’t perfect, I’m open to suggestions. The only accounts I have to pay fees for are the two main accounts. I could probably turn the non expenses account into one of the free online savers, but it’s good to have a card for the account that I can use for big unexpected but important purchases. I…

Dating and the Law of Attraction (45)

      morete on November 19, 2011 2:53 am

The most plausible “laws of attraction” between members of the opposite sex are in the ladder theory. “The Secret” nonsense is more psychobabble that is about as accurate as horoscopes are. “Name it and claim it” theories have been around since the beginning of time. Religions have used it for eons. If you have come to this webpage, it’s probably because you’re in the Abyss just like many others including myself are. If you’re interested in finding out more, read The Ladder Theory.

Joseph Danrock on July 21, 2011 5:38 am

Veeery interesting material! I myself have my own variation of the law of attraction with regard to sexual attraction: The Hormonal Law of Attraction. It says that our choices in love life depend on our facial features. But not in the way most people would predict – it is not about beauty. Not convinced? Try to abolish my theory. Find at least one celebrity couple in the whole world, which would contradict my theory (The No Such Couple Paradox). Read more at Nosuchcouple.com

This is a well written article about attraction. But based on experience and observation, it’s primarily the guy’s confidence that gets a woman attracted. No matter how good looking of a guy you are, if you do not have confidence, you’re most likely not attractive to most women.

It is undoubtedly a book which every person should read. My mind blown out after reading few initial pages of it. But still there are people who after reading it cant do anything and blame it. Those people are the ones who have no guts and courage to do anything other than criticism.

Rich UK on October 31, 2011 7:12 am

I found this book to be the most repetitive narrative I’ve ever read. The factual parts could probably be condensed into one chapter, yet the book annoyingly repeats points continually all the way through. The real thrust is simply to advise readers to buy assets e.g. items that provide an income, rather than perceived assets such as a new car or a better house as these are really liabilities. There is really very little else to take from the book, it was a stuggle to finish as it gets incredibly tedious from Chaper 1 and things did not improve after.

Interesting article – I do wonder though about a few things: 1) generational impact/age impact – I suspect that for people in their 20′s relationships/friendships cross boundaries more often than in the 30′s/40′s – but I do wonder if it catches up again to single people in their 40′s. 2) like the author – gay/lesbian community – I suspect the rules are very different. also different for straight people with gay/lesbian friends 3) personality disorders – always a cause for chaos and misunderstandings in relationships. :-( My story – 22 years ago – dated a guy – did not get intimate (almost) but fell head over heels in love with him – lost touch until a couple years ago when we found each other. He has a girlfriend and he has been “saved”. I spent the weekend visiting him – he never mentioned the girlfriend and only reluctantly brings her up – BUT if I push him on relationship definition he says he has a committed relationship with a little more – with her – and a committed/firm friendship with me. And that the two paths will never cross and will never interfere with each other. I should mention we live several states apart while the girlfriend is in the same city. The “girlfriend” doesn’t let him in her house/broke up with him/kicked him out/blah blah blah.. So – I think.. there’s…

      KO on August 30, 2011 12:47 pm

Men and penises. Women have vaginas. Once we look past new age feminist talk of acceptance of men and women being friends, we’ll understand what’s really going on. Women who fancy themselves on maintaining friendships with their ex boyfriends all often fill an emotional void that was or is no longer there. I’ve experienced the girlfriend with male friends dilemma. I’ve found women with primarily male friends are attention seekers and only get that positive reinforcement from males. I can tell you that if your girlfriend is good looking, they want to be with her, physically and/or romantically. They will wait around for years in the friend zone for their moment of opportunity. If your girlfriend wore tight jeans, they would look at her ass. Why? Because they are a guy and will play the friend role until they can have it. I’ve found women who attempt to have a real man as a boyfriend, as they simultaneously keep their group of male friends, end up losing their man. The reason this occurs is because a real man smell a poacher a mile away. When the man explains the man’s true intentions to his girlfriend, the girlfriend will either 1) get rid off these guys or 2) tell you you’re being jealous or irrational. The latter option is where relationships fail when such opposite sex friends are introduced. The man, being a man, will not tolerate an immature women thinking otherwise. He may initially tolerate it but if the behavior doesn’t…

What Europeans and Americans Can Learn From Each Other (14)

I was just pondering the “Art of Living” idea today. I am an American, and I am work addicted for sure. The idea of not being in a rush is so foreign in my American experience. In fact, I often work through lunch. The idea that Europeans have a more relaxed and creative/relational focus is appealing. Yet my American culture is deeply embedded. When I took a writing workshop with senior citizens this summer, I was maddened by the pace. They acted like they had all day, and it took two months for me to acclimate to their group.

I’ve struggled balancing my secret and crazy dream and doing what is expected of me from my parents. I’m a smart kid and come from a middle-class background. My whole family has been a part of sports (including myself) and i dont mind it. my parents expect me to have this great future doing smart people stuff. (that sounds intelligent right? lol) The typical “you need to be a doctor/lawyer” bit. But what i really want is to be part of the film industry. Ive done a few theater acting things in the past but nothing substantial or very serious and I like film much more. I just feel like theater is so exaggerated. How does one even practice acting? How does one even get better? I’m pretty sure I’m already horrible at it but I really enjoy it. The good thing is that I know im a…
