How Talent Can Hold You Back (61)

Andrew Liongosari on April 8, 2012 9:23 pm

Thanks a lot! I just realized the real deal is to DO things, not to be ABLE to do them. And when we think we could easily, we tend not to. This is just one of the reasons effort is more important than talent…

GP Hintz on March 24, 2012 10:58 am

Great stuff! I like how you turn it upside down. Many people think that talent is the thing that is going to get you there, but often it can be the one thing that is stopping you. I think the key is a balanced life, career and family. Balance trumps talent and allows for great synergy in every aspect of our lives. “Awareness” is SO IMPORTANT. Like Socrates said… “Know Thyself”. An endeavor that we all need to pursue a little more.

15 Ways To Stabilize So Your Dreams Can Materialize (41)

Shaun Rosenberg on April 8, 2012 8:07 pm

Great article! I completely agree that you should make sure you are stable before investing into something risky. I learned that early in my life and I have always seen people jumping the gun and putting all of their eggs in one basket. When you do that you could make it big, but you can lose it all as well. The key is to have a stable ground that you are standing on before you make your jump. That way you still have a good upside potential, but your downside potential is limited.

Hi everyone, Awesome post! I am in this process myself at the moment. The part on letting go of insecurities definately applies the most, aswell as fears and past experiences that are stopping you from succeeding in this (like where fear of failure/success come from when you were younger for example.) As i’m letting go of this stuff with EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) I am becoming more and more inspired and come up with more intuitions of what to do next and I love it! Each time I let go of something the better it gets! -Ben

Can Beer Help Your Golf Game? (5)

      LibertyBell on April 5, 2012 9:47 am

Brian, Your post can beer help your golf game really hits home. When I first started playing it was all about the beer, and I also thought about how the golf course was the only place you could legally drink and drive. Your right the first couple of beers did seem to help my game but it was a downward spiral after that. Since my game was awful anyway I continued to drink throughout my rounds for sometime. I got to a point where I was actually starting to play a decent game and found the drinking was turning a decent round into a disaster. Since then I have been holding off drinking until the 19th hole and have manage to make par on a few holes. All you have to do is to look at John Daly to know drinking during your round is a recipe for disaster. LibertyBell

      Randy on December 14, 2011 9:10 pm

Keeping confident is a key principle of golfing well in my opinion. It just so happens booze has that as a side effect. =] Just think if people could harness that idea. You gys should check out this post on golf attitude I think you’ll really enjoy it.

How to Break into the Film Industry (197)

      John on April 5, 2012 3:29 am

Hi, my name is John Serrano and I was just wondering if I could trouble you for a little advice? I realize that you are probably very busy but I would be very appreciative if you could help me out.Your article actually really helped me. Right now, I’m about to enter the same boat you were in. I’m planing to move to LA very soon to find work in the film industry and hopefully chase after my dreams of becoming an auteur filmmaker. My current problem is that I don’t know where exactly I should move to in LA. Where would you recommend someone in my situation to move to? Right now I’m looking into apartments in Mid-Wilshire, Hollywood, Santa Monica, West LA, and Culver City. But I have noticed that many production companies are stationed in Burbank, Century City, Universal City and many other places. One other problem I would like to ask about is how I can get my very first job. It’s still a bit unclear to me about how I can make my first move. Should I just go for it and start sending my resumes to any production office I could find? How do I go about doing this? I’m still a bit confused. If you could take the time to help me out, I’d really appreciate it. It would be a great help. Thank you.

    Bulk Candy Vending (340)

      Lisa on March 31, 2012 7:34 pm

Hi, Investing in a bulk candy machine sounds like something I would be interested in. I’m a single mother working full time and going to school, so even earning a little bit of extra income each month without going to a second job and sacrificing time with my son and school work would be the way to go for me! I saw a triple candy machine on gumball.com for $149. Not too bad. I also am a member at Sam’s Club, so I can do my bulk candy there. I would like to start out with one machine, give it some time and see how it goes. Then go from there My question is, how do you report income on something like this? I know you said about the separate bank account, but what will I need at tax time in regards to the vending machine business? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

      Paula on January 27, 2012 4:01 pm

i have some revolution 650 candy and nut machines for sale. (some still unopened in boxes) I’m in Vancouver Canada. Anyone interested?

Samuel Kamau on January 9, 2012 6:13 am

Found your blog resourceful and quite imaginative. I guess you already have made it in your film making venture because aside from making the candy vending business lessons seem relatively easy thanks to your writing; i found myself chuckling imagining the candy man speeding down the street in an equally souped up candy automobile with a cooler full of candies occupying the back seat, visiting one of your locations for a refill and stealthily making an entrance without causing as little as a stir. This is one scene i would love to see in a movie. LOL! I will plunge into this business in my homeland of Kenya thanks to your insight and encouragement.

What Europeans and Americans Can Learn From Each Other (15)

I was just pondering the “Art of Living” idea today. I am an American, and I am work addicted for sure. The idea of not being in a rush is so foreign in my American experience. In fact, I often work through lunch. The idea that Europeans have a more relaxed and creative/relational focus is appealing. Yet my American culture is deeply embedded. When I took a writing workshop with senior citizens this summer, I was maddened by the pace. They acted like they had all day, and it took two months for me to acclimate to their group.

    Signs of Insecurity (133)

Cindy Hayen on March 18, 2012 10:36 am

Great article Brian. I’m glad I came across it. Insecurity is very prevalent in many people and at the root of many of their perceived problems in life, such as relationship issues, addictions, depression, anxiety, and a general unhappiness in life. Thanks for writing a very informative article!

I love this very simple, direct article on insecurity. I have dealt with this throughout most of my life and Im starting to see the negative effects of this in my quality of life and the future. Im 36 years old right now, and Im wondering if it is getting too late for me. Please help! :)

Anthony Hopkins on February 17, 2012 4:55 pm

In response to the commenter who mentioned certain people were getting their “panties in a bunch” about the overly sexual part: Nice opinion, but I’m not sure what a woman being “overly sexual” WITHIN a relationship actually means. Is it dressing in a way that provokes sexual excitement? wanting a lot of sex? Can you clarify? I’m mainly asking for clarification as to why a) there’s no counter-point in men in the most obvious corollary of being flashy and materialistic for women and b) why this is mentioned for women specifically within relationships. I’m confused because for many women, I think a big part of being in a relationship is the ability to be sexual often and frequently — with lowered health risks and increased emotional satisfaction. Yes, there are women who undervalue their bodies and give sex to the wrong people in hopes that they’ll return the favor (they won’t), but simply creating a category of female insecurity called “overly sexual”… comes off a little judgmental… and insecure.

Why Smart People do Dumb Things (38)

      Lj on February 6, 2012 8:19 am

I specifically googled this type of article because my BF seems to be brilliant but… challenged. I feel like I’m taking care of a spoiled 5 year old! I genuinely think something is very wrong with his thinking. Socially, he is sweet and appropriate. But as discussed here he seems absent of common sense. He loses things, behaves without thinking and disregards my feelings and needs. For example, as he watches me mop the floor then mindlessly drops food and walks off. On a more serious note, he wakes me up every morning at 2 am banging doors and turning on lights all the while knowing I can’t go back to sleep. This has caused me to have an Ambien addiction as I became so miserably sleep deprived. After 5 years of this, I began yelling at him as he is driving me crazy. I even broke-up with him amicably thinking this was his cryptic way of saying “get lost”!!!! But he didn’t want that, so I’m trying to live with it. I love him and just want to understand and help him. I don’t think he does it on purpose, but he comes off as extremely rude and irritating. I’ve tried instilling methods to help him be more organized but he is totally resistant. I know no one is perfect. I admire his intelligence, but his personality is making me insane. Any ideas on how to deal with this?

If possible, as you turn out to be expertise, would you mind updating your blog with more details? It’s highly helpful for me. Big thumb up for this blog publish!

My little sister said that its societies fault, for up bringing their children to be have a lack of social life as an easier way to success. “Focus on school Johnny, forget those friends of yours”. Mothers have been known to state that famous quote, that their children shouldn’t go to school to make friends they go there to learn. They then feel left out of the life of their class mates, they start to lose interest in the social aspect of school, and focus on the academics. They lack forming that social creativity in the period of time, and as they grow older it becomes a norm. Smart students go to school to learn, where as “cool” kids want to make friends. Some smart people listen, they follow a functional, technical, and logical function, therefore lacking the out side the box crazy unimaginative illogical aspect of their lives, which tend to help make great conversation. Also some smart people watch their words, and think before they leap into relationships and tend to not associate with people who sound nuts! :D hehe. Thats my thought on why smart people lack socially!

      Max on April 12, 2011 4:07 am

Critical thinking is not about comparing but rather analyzing both aspects and undertanding both. The difference is that you don’t dismiss one over the other and you don’t completely choose. You understand that both exist at the same time and there is not a need to choose one over the other but just an understanding of both (duality)

Dating and the Law of Attraction (45)

      morete on November 19, 2011 2:53 am

The most plausible “laws of attraction” between members of the opposite sex are in the ladder theory. “The Secret” nonsense is more psychobabble that is about as accurate as horoscopes are. “Name it and claim it” theories have been around since the beginning of time. Religions have used it for eons. If you have come to this webpage, it’s probably because you’re in the Abyss just like many others including myself are. If you’re interested in finding out more, read The Ladder Theory.

Joseph Danrock on July 21, 2011 5:38 am

Veeery interesting material! I myself have my own variation of the law of attraction with regard to sexual attraction: The Hormonal Law of Attraction. It says that our choices in love life depend on our facial features. But not in the way most people would predict – it is not about beauty. Not convinced? Try to abolish my theory. Find at least one celebrity couple in the whole world, which would contradict my theory (The No Such Couple Paradox). Read more at Nosuchcouple.com

This is a well written article about attraction. But based on experience and observation, it’s primarily the guy’s confidence that gets a woman attracted. No matter how good looking of a guy you are, if you do not have confidence, you’re most likely not attractive to most women.

It is undoubtedly a book which every person should read. My mind blown out after reading few initial pages of it. But still there are people who after reading it cant do anything and blame it. Those people are the ones who have no guts and courage to do anything other than criticism.

Rich UK on October 31, 2011 7:12 am

I found this book to be the most repetitive narrative I’ve ever read. The factual parts could probably be condensed into one chapter, yet the book annoyingly repeats points continually all the way through. The real thrust is simply to advise readers to buy assets e.g. items that provide an income, rather than perceived assets such as a new car or a better house as these are really liabilities. There is really very little else to take from the book, it was a stuggle to finish as it gets incredibly tedious from Chaper 1 and things did not improve after.

I think the first sentence says it all!!! Too many people these days are either one or the other… On the extreme ends too, when you hire a business man, you have to expect that at some point he’ll leave and do his own thing. If you hire a creative, you have to expect that they’re pretty much only good as a think tank…any actually implementation will bore them. Of course this is a gross over-generalization, but it rings true for most businesses. If you are one or the other, you have to learn to be be both…read, watch, listen, and let it all soak in :)

Woah! I’m really enjoying the template/theme of this website. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s difficult to get that “perfect balance” between usability and visual appearance. I must say you have done a very good job with this. Also, the blog loads very quick for me on Firefox. Exceptional Blog!

You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic to be really something which I think I would never understand. It seems too complicated and very broad for me. I’m looking forward for your next post, I’ll try to get the hang of it!

Being a novice writer, and a part time business person has taught me that persistence is the key to success. Being able to withstand great amount of judgement is the only way to learn a craft correctly. Having pride on the other hand is great to fuel the fire, but a little too much can be misleading.

What I’d Tell Myself if I Were 18 Again (48)

      Connie on July 12, 2011 3:36 pm

Loved the article! Glad I got to read it at 16 :) is it sad that at 16 I have already been stressing about my future and career path for quite a while? I’ve struggled balancing my secret and crazy dream and doing what is expected of me from my parents. I’m a smart kid and come from a middle-class background. My whole family has been a part of sports (including myself) and i dont mind it. my parents expect me to have this great future doing smart people stuff. (that sounds intelligent right? lol) The typical “you need to be a doctor/lawyer” bit. But what i really want is to be part of the film industry. I have virtually no idea about it at all, but it fascinates me more so than anything else i do. The issue, however, is i feel like that would be wasting what my parents have invested in my education already having gone to private schools specifically to one day attain their idea of a “smart job”. I’m even embarrassed to admit to a bunch of strangers online that i’ll never meet that i think i want to act in particular (although the whole industry fascinates me). Ive done a few theater acting things in the past but nothing substantial or very serious and I like film much more. I just feel like theater is so exaggerated. How does one even practice acting? How does one even get better? I’m pretty sure I’m already horrible at it but I really enjoy it. The good thing is that I know im a…

Hey Scared, I think we’re in the same boat. I am 21 with a 2 year degree and I’m working on my bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. I have a very good technical background, and I’ve been thinking about starting up some kind of Internet business. Of course, I have no idea what kind of business to start or where to begin, but maybe you’d be interested in swapping some ideas and maybe making some money in the process. You can email me anytime.

      scared on April 24, 2011 9:45 pm

Read this and it really got me thinking… u see, all my life, i’ve always wanted to get it all right (i still do!) and i guess i pretty much have considering i’m 20 and with a college degree. But, my life is just plain bland! i know i want something more but just don’t know how to get it. i’m tired of the whole comfort zone and lack of adventure… i don’t want to turn 30 and wish i had done better with my 20s. i actually want to look back and laugh at my mistakes now, the problem is whenever a tiny bit of crazy stuff to do comes knocking (on very rare occasions), the fear creeps in (i start asking every negative ‘what-if’ question in my head), i fold up and every i-want-to-enjoy-my-life thought flies out the window. then i’m back to my freaking boring life! i wish i had a clue what to do…

Make Vending as Passive as Possible (44)

      Malcolm on July 1, 2011 6:46 am

Hey Brain, You’ll be amazed just how people spend time and money getting the location, machine then forget or get side tracked by not servicing the machines the they set up. There is nothing worse than seeing an empty vending machine. It happens though. Malcolm

      Tina on May 12, 2011 10:56 am

Just starting out with 5 machines. I look for delivery on them next week. I’ve never done this before but I’m excited about it. I was laid off last year and I think this might be a good backup income if I ever need it. I chose to go with U-turn machines…..any comments?

The easiest locations to get are employee break rooms. They benefit because it keeps their employees happy. As for restaurants, you have to sell it. They are harder to get.

The efficient market theory is bullshit. I mean just think about the myriad of different ways people react to everyday events on an individual basis – multiple that millions – there’s no elegance to the way we react. Sure, it would be nice to know but efficient market theorists are trying to cleverly predict the future. Just my two cents ;) . Zach
