I use both Adwords and Adsense. Being on the Adsense side is much nicer. Adwords has gotten very expensive and have been told that you should assume about 20% of your traffic is going to be click fraud. It is still worth putting adsense on your blog or site and it can help readers find more information on topics they are looking for that are related to you site. Even though small at first it is passive income and can really ad up.

Great advice on discouraging friends and family on fraudulent ad clicking. Google treats click fraud very seriously, so seriously some have been banned for life for violating policy.

Are you aware of Google's recent enhancements to their Landing Page and Sites Quality Guidelines? They’ve initiated a crack down on Made for AdSense (MFA) pages and sites. Here’s a link to their guidelines.
